Sound Designer/Editor & FX/Field Recordist
Bristol | London
"I’ve had the privilege of working on three films with Nic and his passion is infectious—every film is born again in his studio. He doesn’t just create a rich, authentic soundscape that’s faithful to place, time and subject; he senses and amplifies narrative themes and moods, elevating the film to another level. He’s a real artist and a joy to work with"
James Byrne, Director, Gorongosa Media
About
Nicholas Allan is a Bristol-based sound designer, editor and FX/field recordist working across drama, documentary, art installation, short-form and long-form audio.
With a lifelong passion for the natural world, he specialises in projects with nature themes and settings, bringing particular expertise to environmental storytelling.
Recent work includes the feature documentaries The Letter/Laudato Si (YouTube Originals, dir. Nicolas Brown) and Lucy the Human Chimp (HBO, dir. Alex Parkinson), the award-winning sci-fi feature LOLA (dir. Andrew Legge), and natural history programmes Island of the Sea Wolves (Netflix), Jane Goodall's Rescued Chimpanzees of the Congo (Curiosity Stream), and Axolotl (dir. Madeleine Westwood).
In drama, he has worked on several series of Unforgotten (ITV) and has just completed his seventh series on BBC's hugely popular Death in Paradise, building the sunny, wildlife-rich natural setting the show is known for. He has produced soundtracks for brands such as Leica and is currently collaborating with performance, installation and activist artist Liz Crow.
As both sound editor and field recordist, Nicholas is particularly drawn to the aesthetic and spatial dimensions of sound. His own recordings—focused primarily on natural and urban environments—feature prominently in his editorial work.
He is a member of AMPS and Wildscreen Network, and guest lecturer in sound design for the University of the West of England.
